Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel was elected to serve a four-year term as the top prosecutor of the third-largest prosecuting agency in the nation. The ACLU of Arizona released the following statement in response to the election results.
“Over the last two years the ACLU of Arizona led a community education campaign to elevate the importance of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office and its role in Arizona’s mass incarceration crisis. During both the primary and general elections, we ensured that every county attorney candidate answered to those most impacted by injustice and racism in the criminal legal system. There was not a single candidate running who did not make criminal legal reform a key tenant of their policy platform. That’s the win we were after,” said ACLU of Arizona campaign strategist Analise Ortiz. “We also want to wish County Attorney Allister Adel a full recovery as she was recently hospitalized due to a serious medical issue. We look forward to meeting with her in the future to discuss how we can work together to reduce the negative impacts this office has in communities across Maricopa County.”
